Ethanol as a lead replacement: phasing out leaded gasoline in Africa

چکیده

The rising cost of lead additives and of gasoline, and the falling cost of ethanol and sugarcane, have created favorable economic conditions for fuel-ethanol production. In Africa, where lead additives are still heavily used and where sugarcane production is high, ethanol can be a cheap source of octane. More than enough sugarcane is produced in Africa to replace all the lead used in African gasoline; this would require Africa to produce about 20% of amount of ethanol currently produced in Brazil, and would require the shift of some sugar production to ethanol production. At a more modest scale, African countries that could replace lead with ethanol using primarily their by-product molasses production include Zimbabwe, Kenya, Egypt, Zaire, Zambia, Sudan, Swaziland, and Mauritius. r 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. Phasing out leaded gasoline will not end lead poisoning in developing countries.

The phaseout of leaded gasoline would be a significant step forward in the reduction of a major source of exposure; however, this undertaking , even if successful, will have limited public health impact if other sources of exposure are not substantially reduced. For instance, in Mexico City, after the introduction of unleaded gasoline in 1990, lead concentrations in air declined from 1.2 pg/m3 ...

Atmospheric lead pollution in fine particulate matter in Shanghai, China.

The Pb-monitoring program was extended for 6 years from 2002 to 2007 at 17 representative urban sites (6 traffic, 5 industrial, and 6 residential sites), and 3 suburban sites to assess the lead pollution in fine particulate matter (PM2.5) after phasing out leaded gasoline in Shanghai. Compared with Pb levels reported in other places, the Pb pollution in Shanghai is still serious after phasing o...

Blood lead levels in children after phase-out of leaded gasoline in Kinshasa, the capital of Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)

BACKGROUND The phasing out of lead from gasoline has resulted in a significant decrease in blood lead levels (BLLs) in children during the last two decades. Tetraethyl lead was phased out in DRC in 2009. The objective of this study was to test for reduction in pediatric BLLs in Kinshasa, by comparing BLLs collected in 2011 (2 years after use of leaded gasoline was phased out) to those collected...

PWP-010 Price Incentives for Fuel Switching: Did Price Differences Slow the Phase-Out of Leaded Gasoline?

In the U.S., the regulatory approach to automobile fuel choices has consisted almost exclusively of mandated changes in autos and fuel availability. This contrasts with Europe, where di®erential taxes and fees have been used to encourage the use of unleaded gasoline and diesel fuel. I use data for 48 states from 1980 to 1989 to estimate the e®ect of price di®erences between leaded and unleaded ...

Ethyl-leaded gasoline: how a classic occupational disease became an international public health disaster.

The author describes the controversy about the use of tetraethyl lead (TEL) as a gasoline additive. Early warnings were ignored by industry, and as leaded gasoline became more profitable, scientists willing to support industry were financed as guardians of the scientific criteria for lead's health impacts. Controversy erupted in 1924 after refinery accidents left workers dying from violent insa...
